You just have to unhighlight the parts you don't want to be touched on the mask using the 'Subtract' mode.

The algorithm can improve almost any photo. Be sure to follow the tutorial carefully, highlight all the parts manually and unhighlight the parts you don't want to be edited.

Probably the image is too much blurry for the algorithm to improve it or the blur type is not supported. Be sure that the blur is not due to a low resolution since only out of focus and motion blur affected photos can be improved.
